Best of ’09 is a series of posts inspired by Gwen Bell’s The Best of 09 Blog Challenge. It’s a challenge designed to help me write more and rediscover more grateful moments in my 2009! Hopefully, 31 posts in 31 days ;)
With an ‘s.’ Because I didn’t go anywhere big this year. Not like in 2008 when I saw tulips in Holland’s largest flower garden, canals in Amsterdam and oh yeah, Greece. Six Cyclades islands and Athens (yes, all the current photos on this here blog).
Trips. Because this year has been more about back-and-forthing. Short trips. Short distances. Lots of them. In astrology (smiles) Sagittarius rules long distance or world travel. And it’s exact opposite, Gemini, naturally rules short ‘day’ trips. This year was definitely more of a Gemini year for travel and trips.
Bakersfield
We’ve made lots of trips back and forth over the Grape Vine this year.
Everything that is Andrea is about 2 ½ hours away. My girlfriend’s hometown and family.
Now I know for some, Bakersfield is not much to write home about. Especially for the more liberal & open minded folks. However, when people you love live there (which means sometimes loving people like that) it’s unavoidable. Our worlds collide. And we always enjoy warmth, love, laughs and this year a few more tears.
February we were delighted and surprised by snow covered hills. Clear skies after a storm, extra chilly air for Southern California was something to appreciate as we drove to Andrea’s aunt’s funeral services. In April, her mother’s 60th birthday. In May, helping her mom sell her home. The one that Andrea grew up in. And our latest trip for roller derby where we rooted for the Diamond Divas with Yolanda, Andrea’s BFF.
Lancaster / Palm Dale
That’s where Yolanda and Zia live. When we feel like livin’ the high life, we head on out to Lancaster. No shit! Yo & Z have the biggest new house. We call it the ranch. And when we hang out with these two, we can always count on tons of laughter and lots of fun. Zia, the Biology Profressor who loves poking all sorts of fun at my astrology stuff. Calls me the Karma Queen. Spoiled with good food and good company.
San Diego
My dear friend Kurt lives in San Diego. And he is just one of my favorite people on the planet. We have tons of history. Good-to-fill-the-pages-of-a-book kinda history. I enjoy spending time with Kurt for a lot of reasons. We went to high school together, we were high school sweeties even and now we’re both gay. Like I said before…
My girlfriend Andrea and I made the annual trek to San Diego for it’s largest civic event… Pride. Yes. San Diego’s largest civic event is a gay & lesbian pride festival. I heart California!
A repeat of previous years but always worth precious time spent with Kurt. We stayed two-nights… cooking, bar hopping, drinking mimosas at Baja Betty’s watching the parade. Wild gay people everywhere!
So this year, there was no one big trip. But tons of tiny ones. All still worth their weight in gold.
Until tomorrow…
